WHAT

JALOPY: an old vehicle that shows the scars and dents gained from hard and constant use. Probably doesn’t get better with age!!! But each dent and ding must have a story.

This is an oversized jacket. It fits up to a size 14. It has three red snaps at front closure. Fully lined with scrap and cast-off fabric. Side Front pockets. Made (mostly) of cotton denim.

The patches are cut from garments (mostly denim jeans) that ended up discarded. These rescued textiles get repurposed into a new story. Denim has integrity, while it is strong and durable, it shows wear and tear in ways that make it more interesting as it gets worn and aged. HOW

Discarded jeans are painstakingly ripped apart and re-worked into a unique piece of wearable art. I spent years working in the corporate fashion industry which ranks as the 4th most polluting industry in the world. It uses a staggering amount of water, pesticides, and energy. Mass produced clothing has become a soulless commodity made in poor countries, by people paid low wages and forced to work in unsafe conditions. Even the luxury segment of the industry uses this model. I’m using what is discarded to recreate something new that also makes a statement about excessive waste in an industry that has been slow to acknowledge the part it plays in climate change.

WHY

My mission at MMD is to build awareness about how our clothing choices matter. One person alone can’t change the world, but historically big changes have begun with small groups of committed citizens.
