Mary Marino: RECLAMATION Project

Hello Friends,

ALL styles are LIMITED EDITION. And this is WHY?

I use recycled denim, vintage discards and fabrics from the “aftermarket” for my collections. The “aftermarket” sells goods that are of no further use to the original manufacturer. They’re out there waiting to be found, reclaimed, and recycled. It’s always an adventure. I never know what I’m going to find.

Once I’m out of a fabric or a component, I may find something similar but not exactly what I had before. This way I can keep my collection creative and constantly evolving. Recycling is important to me. Sustainability has to be more than just rhetoric.  I use only what is available already.

I had a long career in the fashion industry working for big companies that produced thousands of each item. Many companies follow the same business model. Fashion has become cheap and disposable, glutting our landfills with textile and fashion waste. But cheap fashion has a high cost. When a tuna sandwich costs more than a t-shirt, several things are happening behind the curtain. The fabric is made more cheaply, the sewing is low quality, and the people making it are working for non-living wages in bad conditions.

I hope things are changing now. The industry was over saturated and over leveraged before the pandemic. The global meltdown was the final blow. Too many stores. Too much inventory. A monumental reckoning. Now maybe we can rebuild in a more reasonable way.

Support small businesses. Quality over quantity. Humanity rules!
