Yiddish is a language in which words sound like what they are describing. Sometimes it’s hilarious!

Schmatte is the Yiddish word for a rag or a dress in somewhat of a sad shape, as in, "wouldn't be caught dead in that schmatte!" It was also used by my dear friend, Karen, who entertained us with stories about her quirky but fabulous aunt, Rivka, who schlepped around Seventh Avenue selling schamttes to the women who worked in the offices. Also, a schmatte wrapped around your head is an ingenious way to deal with a bad hair day!

Martino Marino arrived on Ellis Island from Sicily around the turn of the 20th century. He was my GrandPop. I’ve always wanted to name a collection after him.
