A lot of credit for exposing the world to sartorial senior style should go to Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style, who sought out and began photographing stylish seniors about 10 years ago. Cohen set his lens on them and this exposure coincided with the rise of social media giving us access to an international community of stylish seniors. Many are social media influencers and are finding new careers promoting products to their thousands of followers. Some are getting modeling gigs for major fashion companies.

Here are a few of my favorite Muses (in case you missed it)!

AND here is my style manifesto:

  1. I’ve had many years of experimenting with fashion. EGAD looking back at some old photos!!!! Are those shoulder pads or Volkswagens under my jacket? But what didn’t kill me made me stronger and more self-aware. I know what I like and what makes me feel confident.

  2. Whether it’s a crazy ball gown or a clown hat, I must be able to wear it without pain, itching, or shortness of breath. Just to put a point on this, comfort and style are not mutually exclusively. Even if some would argue with this…

  3. Feeling good in my clothes is as important as looking good. If I’m not comfortable in my clothes, trust me, it will show. If I have to tug it down, hitch it up or unzip it to breathe who needs it?

  4. I’m active, creative, inspiring and ambitious, I want my style to mirror these qualities. Fashion can help express who I am. My age should not define me or my style.

  5. I will poohpooh any advice on dressing for my age. That’s as passe as the milkman! I fought for civil rights, voting rights, and women’s rights and rocked to the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger’s pushing 80 and still putting it out there so why should I take to a rocking chair?

  6. Still rockin’ but not in a chair!

HEY! I’m Turning the tables. Interview with Ginger. I’ll be asking HER the question this time.

Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2012. At 1 PM EST. We’ll be on Instagram Live.

Wisdom that says you must dress for your age is as stale as last weeks’ bagels. This week in my first Style Lab Series interview I’ll be talking to Ginger Burr of Total Image Consultants. If you’re feeling ambivalent about what your style is or can be, working with a stylist helps hone your style profile. Ginger will curate options that become the cornerstone of your wardrobe. You’ll get a game plan for what colors, styles, and patterns that flatter your body, complexion, lifestyle etc. So, when you go shopping you can immediately identify if something works.
